Introducing Global Citizens: Empathy

In this course, students focus on building skills, such as empathy, that will enable them to become effective global citizens. Students will learn to take on the perspectives of others and understand their emotions, all while exploring the human impact on the environment. With this knowledge, students will complete hands-on STEAM projects, connecting concepts learned in class to the real world.

Lesson Overview

Over the course of four lessons, students will explore varying aspects of global citizenship, emotional intelligence and empathy, and the human impact on the environment.

In the first lesson, students learn what global citizenship is and why it is important. Students explore human emotion, and build skills around recognizing these emotions. Even further, students begin to develop their skills in perspective-taking and empathy. These actionable skills will be used throughout subsequent lessons to assess human impact on our oceans, and to use STEAM-based knowledge to combat this impact.

Oceans cover over 70% of our planet, so it is no wonder they hold a significant importance to life on Earth. In this lesson, students will delve more into this importance and will learn why keeping our oceans clean is vital to the sustainability of our planet. Students will explore sources of ocean pollution and will begin to critically evaluate the current situation in our oceans.

Having learned about the problems affecting our oceans, students will begin to think critically not only about solutions, but also about possible consequences of non-action. Students will start to formulate action plans as global citizens on how to best impart positive change on our environment.

In our last lesson, students will have the opportunity to practice their empathy skills in approaching the problems that marine life face due to our impact and in developing further solutions to these problems. Students will further explore practical applications of what they have learned to other environmental issues as well.
