Origami Science: Cell Structure

In this course, students combine the hands-on fun of origami with the wonder of learning about life science. While making their own origami models, students will learn about the basic unit of all life: the cell! Students will see how different organisms have different types of cells, all with varying roles and functions. Students will then enter the tiny world inside the cell to see how things happen at the microscopic level.

Lesson Overview

Over the course of four lessons, students will explore many aspects of cell biology, including learning about different cell types and how their structure and physiology vary.

In the first lesson, students learn what cells are and why they are important. Students will explore how life is organized and how this relates to the different types of cells we can find. Students will also get to make their own origami cell models!

Did you know that we can’t usually see cells with just our eyes? Students will explore how we know cells exist and what tools we use to study them. During this lesson, students will also delve into the components within cells that carry out the day to day activities needed. Lastly, students will see how cells replicate.

It is estimated that there are five million trillion trillion bacteria on Earth. Woah!! That is a lot. So it is truly important that students understand the role these often tiny organisms play in our world. Referring back to their models, students will explore the structure and physiology of both bacteria and fungi.

In our last installment, students jump into comparing and contrasting the cells of more complex plant and animal organisms. Coming back to their models yet again, students will now get to see how a variety of cell types can appear and why these differences are integral to each cell's function.
