Lesson Overview

Over the course of four lessons, students will explore varying aspects of reindeer anatomy, physiology and ecological importance, all while having fun making connections to the reindeer’s most important job: getting Santa around the world on Christmas Eve!

Lesson 1

In the first lesson, students will dive right into learning about reindeer by first discussing where they live and what they eat. Did you know that reindeer are one of the few survivors of the last ice age? They’ve been around for millions of years. Woah!! Students will learn fun facts like this one as well as they get up close with these amazing creatures.

Lesson 2

Why do reindeer make such good companions for Santa Claus? Well, they have many adaptations that help them. In this class, students will learn exactly what makes reindeer so well-suited for the harsh conditions of the North Pole. Students will round out this lesson by also learning about the life cycle of these animals.

Lesson 3

Getting around the world on Christmas Eve so quickly certainly must take a lot of energy! So how do reindeer process their food to achieve this? In this class, students will learn exactly that. By making their own origami model of the reindeer digestive system, students will get a hands-on look at what makes these animals so special.

Lesson 4

We’re not quite done yet! Reindeer are important to both the ecosystem and to humans. Did you know that they are the deer species to be domesticated? So not just Santa keeps them! But of course, our course wouldn’t be complete without learning all about reindeer’s place in history as Santa’s most valuable companions.
